Riddle Me This

What do a cantelope, $80 worth of quarters, Ellie, and two pints of Bud Light have in common? No they're not all found at Dave & Buster's. They all weigh four pounds! That's right, Ellie's assessment tonight was a big one. She gained 40 grams putting her at 4.0 pounds (1810 g). Good work Ellie. That's worth a princess sticker for sure! In other news the big E is taking her feedings pretty well, but she has had 6 or 7 mL of residual at least twice today. There is some minor concern that she may have acid reflux. This is not altogether uncommon in preemies. Ellie's friend Liam went home on Prilosec for his acid reflux. But they're also not saying that Ellie has it. As we mentioned earlier she's also had more breathing episodes today. She had about 30 desats during the day shift and 4 A/B episodes. So Dr. Hall decided to put her back on the high flow nasal cannula (1 liter per minute). Since it has been almost a week since she was off breathing support I thought we might be in the clear. But we're trying not to get too broken up about the nasal cannula coming back. Dr. Hall also decided to increase the duration of her feedings from 30 minutes to an hour. Ellie will still eat 35 mL of 26 calorie/ounce milk, but now the milk will be delivered over 60 minutes instead of 30. Looking on the bright side this means we'll get to hold her for longer if we hold her during feedings. That's the news for this evening and remember: You heard it here first! (Well except for Mandy's sister and mom who probably talked to Mandy on the phone tonight.)

  1. Super duper Ellie!!! Thanks Ben for the comparison on Ellie's weight---too funny! We will continue to pray for smooth transitions here cause there are going to be a LOT of them coming up here---for Ellie, Mommy and Daddy! We love you and think of you all multiple times a day! Keep your chins up. :)
