A little set back - UPDATE

Today I've just received word from our nurse that they're going to put Ellie back on a high flow nasal nasal cannula. Today she has had 10 A&Bs (Apnea/Bradycardia) and 13 or 14 desats. (a drop in her blood oxygen saturation) All of her episode As I write they are putting the nasal cannula back in at a flow rate of 2 liters per minute. You'll recall that last week she went from a ventilator to a high flow nasal cannula at 3 then 2 then 1 liters per minute and finally to a low flow nasal cannula before she began breathing completely on her own. Unfortunately, this all means that we will not be able to hold her today. When they are having a rough day the NIC staff likes to be careful not to overstimulate them or ask them to do too much. This is a difficult setback for her parents to handle, but we must keep in mind that she was taken off oxygen very quickly in the first place. I've just spoken with Audrie, one of the NIC nurses. She vas very reassuring. She told me that in the grand scheme of things this is a very minor setback and one that mom and dad shouldn't worry about. She also said to celebrate the good days and not worry too much about the rough days. Too often we are tempted to do the opposite. Praise God that her first setback was a minor one. This will better prepare mom and dad for any other setbacks she might have later on. Also, of course, pray for her breathing. ... It has now been an hour since the nasal cannula back on. She has had great oxygen saturation and no episodes ever since she was put back on it.
